Who doesn't even want to stand behind the camera, work at a radiostation, create 3D visualisations or program professional websites? The Media Technology Bachelor's programme at the Deggendorf Institute of Technology provides a broad range of specialist knowledge in the fields of Printing, TV/Film, Radio and New Media and Internet Applications. To this end, engineering fundamentals, computer science and digital media techniques are combined with media-specific knowledge in graphics, video and audio to enable our graduates to work independently as engineers.

The focus of this degree course is on technical content. It contains a great deal of practical relevance, which, through the choice of a specialisation, an industry semester, practical courses and the bachelor thesis, allows each student to specialise in his or her field of interest such as film, graphics, audio engineering, animation or computer science. The media technicians have access to their own television and radio stations.

The Bachelor's degree can be followed by a Master's degree at the Deggendorf Institute of Technology.

Career prospects

The Media Technology course trains engineers who are capable of acting independently and responsibly in companies and society. Scientific engineering methods, technical skills and knowledge are combined with knowledge of media culture, the basics of media design and important aspects of content as well as generally important elements of business management such as project management and business administration. The media technician thus assumes very important, integrating functions in the company by combining computer science with content, technology with design and products with ergonomics.

Career opportunities are available in all areas in which media are used and produced.
It is not only media enterprises such as film and broadcasting companies, but many other business enterprises, which work in the field of Communication, Entertainment and Internet Presentation, that use media technicians.  The public service sector as well as self-employment offer further development opportunities.  Especially because of their diverse and integrating way of working, media technicians also occupy numerous niche positions in the field of:

Structure of the study programme

The study of media technology comprises seven semesters, including a practical semester (20 weeks of industrial internship). A pre-study internship before the start of the course and a basic internship during the semester breaks is not mandatory, but is recommended in order to gain an insight into later professional life as early as possible.

The programme is very broadly based and consists of five semesters of lectures and the practical semester, which must also be completed by graduates of BOS or FOS. In the seventh semester, students mainly write their Bachelor's thesis, which is usually carried out in a media institute or media company or can also be written in the well-equipped laboratories of the university.

In the third semester one of the two specialisations "Media Design" or "Media Informatics" has to be chosen, which deepens the education either more towards production engineering or more towards informatics.

In addition to the industrial internship, practical skills are further deepened in manageable project groups through case studies, projects and exercises. In addition, four one-week practical courses, which can be selected from the range of courses on offer, are usually completed during the lecture-free period in order to acquire further practical skills on interesting topics.

In the course of the seven semesters two general electives and one subject-specific elective must be taken.

A theoretical study semester, the industrial internship or the bachelor thesis can also be completed abroad.

Upon successful completion of the examinations and the final thesis, the Deggendorf University of Applied Sciences awards the academic degree "Bachelor of Engineering Media Technology".

 

The study objective of the Media Design major is to impart knowledge about the production-oriented development, conception, realisation and marketing of technologies and content in the three areas of print, TV/film and radio. To this end, the following topics are dealt with in practice-oriented projects:

The aim of the Media Informatics course is to impart knowledge of the new media and the corresponding computer technology. The following subjects are dealt with in detail:

  • Development of software systems
  • Design of software interfaces
  • Computer networks and their services
  • Graphic and web programming
  • Internet technologies and Internet applications
  • Applications for mobile phones
