Bavarian Culture Prize in a livestream for the first time

Bayernwerk awards cultural prize to graduates of the Deggendorf Institute of Technology (DIT) - broadcast on 12 November

12.11.2020 | Bayernwerk AG

Pascal Grill, a graduate from the Deggendorf Institute of Technology, will receive the Bavarian Culture Prize from Bayernwerk AG (Bayernwerk) for his master’s thesis in mechanical engineering on Thursday, 12 November at 7 pm. The writer Michaela Karl, the artist Regina Hellwig-Schmid and Carolina Camilla Kreusch, the actor and director Arnd Rühlmann and the opera singer Christa Mayer will also be honoured on the same evening. For the first time, the award ceremony will be held in a digital format. From a studio in Ismaning, it will be transmitted via livestream and additionally on local television stations. The presenter is Nina Sonnenberg. The Special Prize of the Bavarian State Ministry of Science and Art is awarded to conductor, pianist and Nuremberg General Music Director Joana Mallwitz. In addition to Pascal Grill, 32 other graduates of Bavarian colleges and universities will receive the prize in the science category.

Numerical Flow Simulation

In his master’s thesis in mechanical engineering, Pascal Grill investigated the fluid flow in the drive area of a gear pump. In doing so, the 25-year-old used a so-called “numerical flow simulation” (Computational Fluid Dynamics CFD). The aim of the work was to find out under which conditions a lower pressure loss and better hygiene can be achieved.

Speakers from the universities on the “culture couch”

This year the award ceremony of the Bavarian Culture Prize is open to the general public for the first time. “Due to the current pandemic, the event cannot take place in the previous framework. We have therefore decided to use a digital format”, explains Reimund Gotzel, Chairman of the Board of Bayernwerk AG (Bayernwerk). In the 90-minute culture programme (from 7 - 8.30 pm), the winners of the year 2020 will receive the Bavarian Culture Prize. As representatives of the scientists, the spokespeople of their universities and educational institutes will take a seat on the “culture couch”. The prizes in the art category and the special prize are endowed with € 5,000 each, and € 2,000 each in the science category. This time, more than the usual 300-400 invited guests can be present in front of the screens: Interested parties can join in live at www.bayernwerk-live.de/kulturpreis-bayern. Presenter Nina Sonnenberg, as singer Fiva, is also part of the cultural performances accompanying the evening. She will perform alongside the a-cappella quintet Viva Voce, the musician and percussionist Vivi Vassileva and Carollina Bastos and Ariel Merkuri from the Bavarian State Ballet. The local TV stations TV Mainfranken, TV Oberfranken, Oberpfalz TV, TVA Regensburg and Niederbayern TV will broadcast the award ceremony live on their programmes.

The Bavarian Culture Prize is awarded by the Bayernwerk together with the Bavarian State Ministry of Science and Art. In the science section, the 33 best university and college graduates in Bavaria are also honoured: “In these difficult times, we particularly notice how valuable, indispensable and worth supporting culture and science in all their facets are. The Bavarian Culture Prize is a thank you to the people who make such a rich gift to our society with their work in art, culture and science,” explains Reimund Gotzel.

An award with history

For more than 60 years, Bayernwerk has been committed to cultural and scientific commitment and honours it with the Bavarian Culture Prize. The prize was awarded for the first time in 1959 - initially only in Eastern Bavaria. Since 2005, Bayernwerk has been awarding the prize throughout Bavaria together with the State Ministry of Science and Art. All prize winners receive the bronze statue “Gedankenblitz”, created by the Schwandorf sculptor Peter Mayer, and prize money. While an expert jury selects the five art prize winners, the Bavarian state colleges and universities nominate their best graduates and doctoral candidates. The Bavarian State Ministry of Science and Art also awards a special prize to an artist.
