With the decision of the UN World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) of 17 September, the Deggendorf Institute of Technology (DIT) with its European Campus Rottal-Inn (ECRI) was accepted as an “Affiliate Member of UNWTO” in the special organisation of the United Nations.

For DIT, admission to the UNWTO is a milestone which has a particularly positive effect on ECRI with its focus on Health Tourism. As a result, DIT is not only visible in the international environment of the UN, but as an affiliated member can access resources such as the e-library, statistics or materials of the UNWTO and use them for its teaching and research.

Membership in the UNWTO provides worldwide networking opportunities, which also benefit international students. This enables them to establish contact in the international tourism sector and to other members of the organisation already during their studies. Especially with regard to the UNWTO programmes on sustainable tourism development, students from the programme countries are offered a wide range of career opportunities after graduation.

As an affiliated member of the organisation, ECRI and DIT actively contribute to UNWTO’s objectives. Affiliated members are companies, educational and research institutions, tourism destinations and NGOs who enter into the dialogue via the UNWTO platform, exchange information and jointly pursue further steps towards the implementation of the goals pursued by UNWTO in the field of sustainable tourism development and jointly develop innovative products.

UNWTO is a specialised agency of the United Nations with headquarters in Madrid. Its mission is “to promote and develop tourism as a contribution to economic development, international understanding, peace, prosperity and respect for freedom, human rights for all without distinction of race, sex, language or religion”. In particular, UNWTO supports the interests of the developing countries and pursues in its work programme the improvement of the competitiveness of the tourism offers in the member states as well as safeguarding of sustainability and ethics in tourism.
