Professor Ricardo João Cruz-Correia is an Associate Professor at the Department of Community Medicine, Information and Decision Sciences (MEDCIDS), Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto (FMUP). With a background in Computer Science (BSc and MSc, University of Porto) and a PhD in Health Informatics, his academic career has been dedicated to the integration of hospital information systems and the advancement of digital health.

Over the past two decades, he has authored more than 300 scientific publications in health informatics, supervised numerous Master’s and PhD theses, and lectured extensively on topics such as health information systems, electronic patient records, and clinical information models. He has also played an active role in international standardization, contributing to organizations such as HL7, openEHR, IPQ CT199, and ABNT Brasil. He currently serves as President of the Portuguese Health Informatics Association (e-MAIS).

Alongside his academic activity, Professor Correia is a co-founder of three University of Porto spin-off companies—HLTSYS, VirtualCare, PDH and Opvance—and of a professional training school, Ciência e Letras. These ventures reflect his commitment to bridging research, innovation, and practice in healthcare.

In recent years, he has been a prominent voice in exploring the opportunities and risks of large language models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT in higher education and healthcare. His work positions him as both a critical advocate and a pioneer in harnessing artificial intelligence for teaching, research, and clinical practice.
