The vision behind the regionalisation of the university is to develop the Bavarian Forest region into a technology region. Close cooperation between industry and the university is at the forefront.

The concept "Technology Region Bavarian Forest - Technology Transfer Centers of the University" is based on the support of the Ministry of Science and the partner municipalities and was awarded the Bavarian Founder Prize in 2010.

Geoinformatics is the science of electronic processing of geographic and spatial information. As a specialized informatics of geography and surveying, it provides spatial information as geodata. These data are the basis for geoinformation systems (GIS), which are used in many different ways. Mobile navigation devices, route planners, Internet map services and globe software such as Google Earth have already made geoinformation systems and geoinformatics an integral part of our lives.

Applied energy research & electromobility

The future-oriented and climate-friendly design of energy supply is one of the greatest challenges of our time. Cornerstones in this context are increasing energy efficiency, e.g. building automation, the expansion and sensible future use of renewable energies and the economical use of energy. The local and municipal level can also benefit from this transformation of energy systems. Sustainable development is very important. The use of renewable energies and a decentralised energy supply with high added value and high local acceptance are regarded as desirable. We are working on linking effectively controlled energy consumption and intelligently controlled energy generation in order to find a creative, holistic supply option for mobility and public space.

Environment, Spatial Planning, Information & Society

The URIG working group is primarily concerned with spatial planning procedures that bring together digital media and geographical information systems. In doing so, advanced forms of information generation such as crowdsourcing or visualization using augmented reality are used. In various projects, the working group is concerned with integrating technical innovations in the field of PPGIS (Public Participation Geographic Information Systems) into planning processes. Thus, spatially relevant questions of cities, communities and companies can be examined more closely and their planning processes optimised. The working group thus takes up the gap between technical possibilities and new procedures on the one hand and urban and spatial planning and citizen participation on the other, in order to solve social conflicts in different projects.

UAV & Remote Sensing

In the field of geodata applications, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) are particularly suitable for use in agriculture and forestry. In GPS-supported precision agriculture, for example, it is a matter of taking into account differences in the field that occur over small areas (site-specific variability), such as the consideration of biomass distribution or the variability of the food and pest situation. The UAVs that can be used for this purpose have suitable remote sensing sensors, e.g. in the near infrared, thermal infrared (thermal image), multispectral or hyperspectral range. UAV-supported remote sensing data recorded in real time enable a comprehensive recording of the nutrient situation in the plants and thus a precisely adapted, GPS-supported application of fertiliser. The savings potential is considerable, and the method is also environmentally friendly, because even small-scale overfertilisation can be avoided.

The increasing demand for smartphones requires stable and innovative hardware and software solutions. App-based readout of vehicle data, control of production machines via smartphones or navigation in factory buildings and exhibition halls are just a few of the possible applications, which allow us to draw conclusions about the far-reaching potential of this technology.

The Mobile Systems and Software Engineering working group concentrates primarily on the development of applications for Android, iOS and Windows Phone. In addition, cross-platform application programs with maximum operating system compatibility are developed. This ensures a high degree of homogeneity with regard to design and usability. By an extensive stock of test devices, which is constantly extended by the market novelties, developed applications can be co-ordinated with a broad spectrum of devices.

Since its foundation on 22 April 2009, the Förderverein Technologie Campus Freyung e.V. has supported public relations, the continuous development of the TCF, relations between companies and the university, the awarding of prizes to outstanding graduates, and various events.

Thanks to the support of the association, numerous projects have already been carried out at the Technology Campus Freyung to strengthen science, research and teaching. Among other things: Summerschool Geoinformatics for pupils, Bionics Project Days for pupils, University Here and Now - lecture series, Bionics lecture series, Summer Academy Bionics for students and the financing of laboratory equipment and small devices.
